Why don't web images work for print?

We get asked this question at least twice a day!

Web images are at a resolution of 72 pixels per inch (dots per inch). Print images need to be 300 pixels per inch (dots per inch).

So if you download a web image you can only use it for print at 25% of the size you see on the website.

Also web images are formatted in (rgb) - red, green and blue channels for viewing on computer monitors and TV screens. Print images need to be formatted in (cmyk) - cyan, magenta, yellow and black - the printing ink colours.
