What happens if the Total Ink Coverage (TIC) is larger than specified by the publication?

If the Total Ink Coverage is significantly larger than specified you may get smudging or offset on the page. This is often the case on high speed presses (newspapers) where the ink only has a small amount of time to be absorbed and dry before another page is laid on top.

For example, the publication specifies 220%TIC where the document is 310%TIC. However, if there is only a small area of the document which is at 310% and the rest is below 220% the document may not cause any issue.
